Resident egg artist Kathleen Mand Beck creates carved, etched, and painted egg shells art in her studio in Egg Harbor, Wisconsin. Personalized egg art with names, dates, and diverse designs can be commissioned as unique gifts for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, newborns, baptisms… and every collectible keepsake.
Egg Carving & Decorating Process
A free-range bird egg is the strongest shape in the world, not nearly as fragile as the eggs found in retail markets. All decked out in her working attire, which consists of safety glasses, dust mask, cape, and head-phones adorned with an ostrich plume for inspiration, Kathy is prepared to carve. She uses an air drill that operates at 400,000 rpm. It looks and sounds similar to a dental drill.
Using infertile eggshells that have been bleached and sanitized, the egg and drill become her canvas and brush. Each design is a freehand drawing with careful consideration to every detail. A “dit, a dot, and a dash” become a precise rendering. An eggs-tra special work of egg art is created.
After the egg art is completed, it is once again cleaned and dried. An acrylic coat is applied as a sealant and satin finish to prohibit dust from penetrating the shell. Names, dates, and designs are then carved on the front of the shell. A short message or names can be written on the back in gold to complete the gift.
